Achmed is the skeletal corpse of an incompetent suicide bomber. He is used by Dunham to perform comedy based on the contemporary issue of terrorism. He is known for yelling, “Silence! I kill you!” to Dunham and people in the audience who laugh at him. Achmed first appeared in Spark of Insanity, and later made an appearance in the Very Special Christmas Special, singing a song called “Jingle Bombs”. Most of the humor Dunham expresses with Achmed centers on this motif. When mentioning that Achmed appears to be dead because he’s a skeleton, Achmed responds, “It’s a flesh wound.” When Dunham inquires as to how he died, Achmed explains his incompetence with explosives, while also casting aspersions on Dunham’s sexual prowess by saying that they both suffer from “premature detonation.” Although he frequently mentions working for Osama Bin Laden, Achmed claims he doesn’t think he’s a Muslim (“look at my ass! It says ‘Made in China'”). As of June 2009, the sketch in which Dunham introduced Achmed is the fourth most watched online video ever, having amassed nearly 200 million views.

Stephen Gately dies at age 33

October 12, 2009

Stephen Gately, part of the Irish boy band Boyzone, was found dead while on vacation in Spain. He was 33.

The circumstances of his death are still unclear — the band released a statement that simply said he “tragically died.”

Boyzone was one of the biggest acts in Ireland in the 1990s. The band had announced a comeback tour last year.

Gately became something of a gay icon in the U.K. after he announced he was gay 10 years ago. He married his partner Andrew Cowles (Elton John introduced them) in a civil union in 2006.

Boyzone is an Irish boy band that had popular mainstream success during the 1990s. The group was most successful in Ireland, the UK, Australia and New Zealand; it also had differing levels of success in parts of Europe. The group has released six #1 UK hit singles and four #1 albums, with sales approaching 20 million records as of 2008. They made a comeback in 2007, originally with the intention of just touring but Ronan Keating confirmed in an interview that they wanted to “outdo Take That” in terms of a successful reunion.

Boyzone was put together in 1993 by Louis Walsh who is also known for managing Johnny Logan and Westlife. Before even recording any material they made a now infamous appearance on RTÉ’s The Late Late Show. Their first album Said and Done was released in 1995 and the following two studio albums in 1996 and 1998. Seven compilation albums have been released, the latest being B-Sides & Rarities in October 2008.
